Sutron provided a surface water elevation tracker system for a joint UCLA/CRREL team on the Kangerlussuaq Bridge in Greenland. The system solved CRREL’s need to remotely monitor the water level under the bridge using Sutron’s 9210 Datalogger, the Iridium satellite network, and the SutronWIN web service.

The Watson River in Kangerlussuaq, western Greenland is a significant transporter of meltwater runoff from the Greenland Ice Sheet to the ocean. In 2012 extreme ice melt resulted in overbank flooding and a complete washout of the Watson River Bridge. This event threatened the town’s access to freshwater and critical communication towers. Since this time the bridge has been rebuilt and it provides a new platform for gauging river flow. To that end, we recently installed radar level and air temperature/relative humidity sensors, all of which are controlled by the Sutron 9210B data logger and transmitted via the Iridium satellite network. Using this system and the SutronWIN website, our team can now track Watson River flows in near real-time. Furthermore, a joint UCLA/CRREL team was able to successfully perform the installation despite having less than 18 hours of available ground time, below freezing temperatures, and limited daylight.
