TSUNAMI DETECTION & WARNING

TSUNAMI DETECTION & WARNING

EVENT DETECTION FEATURES UNIQUE TO SUTRON

Eye-witness accounts of tsunami events typically contain the following quote from people on or near beaches. “It was amazing! Suddenly, the sea receded, exposing the bottom for hundreds of yards out into the ocean.”

This classic tsunami indicator signals a warning from nature that a catastrophic wave is building. Huge volumes of shoreline water are forcefully sucked back into the massive mountain of water about to pound the beach. This recession of the water is one of the most accurate indicators that a tsunami is coming, and one of the easiest to detect. A sudden drop in the water level at a tide station means that trouble is coming, and soon.

Minimizing loss of life from tsunami events depends on two key elements:

  • Event Detection
  • Notification and Warning

The Sutron XPert Datalogger for Tsunami Warning offers the following:

Highly programmable and can be interfaced to every common form of water level measuring instrument.

Sutron's Xpert already incorporates the US National Ocean Service methodology for detecting sudden surface drops associated with tsunamis. This detection algorithm works with raw and/or filtered data from any type of water level instrument. The algorithm can easily be customized for special conditions at specific sites.

Uses true independent multi-tasking for sensor monitoring. A single XPert can be interfaced not only to water level instruments, but also to seismic instruments, or any other devices that detect ground or water motion. The programmability of the XPert allows the information to be combined in any way desired by the user.

IMMEDIATE NOTIFICATION - WARNINGS & ALARMS

ALERTS

Detecting a tsunami event is only half the battle. Detection is useless if persons in the immediate area are not notified quickly. In addition, emergency response personnel need notification so that emergency action plans can be activated.

Here again, the XPert shines. Every XPert can “talk” simultaneously over multiple communications links. The US National Ocean Service typically uses the GOES Satellite and a form of cellular or land-line telephone. Some stations also use cellular packet capability, line-of-site radio, and hard-wire links along with GOES and telephone. If you have a communications device then it is likely that the XPert can talk over it. Communications links can be used to send data, or warning messages. An XPert with a voice modem actually talks, relaying audible messages to user cell phones (or any similar receiver) about water levels, weather conditions, any data collected from sensors to which it is attached.

Not just an event logger, the XPert has an I2C “eye-squared C” industrial communications bus, and can be interfaced to digital output modules. Built-in programming capability allows the XPert to “turn on” digital outputs when events are detected. The outputs can control sirens, warning signs, pumps, and multiple other emergency-related devices.
