GPS ANTENNA

FAQs

The GPS Bullet Antenna is a viable option...

1. When the cable length of the magnet mount antenna is not sufficient, the Bullet Antenna should be used. The new standard cable lenths for this antenna are 5 or 10 meters. (There is sufficient gain to go further although not supported.)

2. When an application requires a more robust cable (i.e., direct exposure to the elements), this antenna option provides a UV-rated cable approximately 0.3 inches in diameter.

3. In heavy urban environments or when nearby transmitters may overload a standard mag antenna, the Bullet inside filtering helps with interference issues.

4. The Bullet Antenna should be used in any location where the antenna must be mechanically mounted. Application examples include buoys, towers, ocean exposure, or anywhere with high winds or other problems that might move a magnetic antenna.

Can I still use the standard magnetic antenna?
SatLink 2 is shipped with a standard magnetic mount antenna and a 5 meter co-ax cable. Yes, the standard magnetic antenna is still a good performer. When mounting the standard antenna, consider:

1. Conduit for the tiny cable if there is direct outdoor exposure. The small size of the cable can allow for rodent damage or damage from branches rubbing, etc if installed directly.

2. Mount the antenna so it may be protected from any weather events that may dislodge the antenna. Different installation conditions may require other adjustments or options. Please contact Sutron Sales or Customer Service if you have any questions, (703)406-2800.

In order to install a station with the maximum possible unattended lifespan, please consider the following.

Option 1
Recommended for applications where interference near the GPS frequency band might cause jamming or loss of GPS reception. The antenna is also suited for marine environments & applications where a more rugged antenna is required. This antenna has a TNC connector allowing the use of special length cables. (Mounting hardware not included.)
Sutron Part #: 5000-0170-1

Option 2
Mounting Kit

This kit is designed to mount to existing Uni-Strut type mounting arms used at many stations. Included are a 4 inch stainless steel threaded pipe with a pair of Uni-Strut mounting brackets with hardware for mounting to a Uni-Strut tower arm. (Kit does not include the Uni-Strut arm on the tower, see below.)
Sutron Part #: 6211-1209-1

Option 3
Tower Mount Arm (Uni-Strut Solid Wall)
Length is 38 inches. Plating is Hot Dipped Galvanized. Remember to place the antenna in an open sky view location, i.e. away from the tower as much as possible.
Sutron Part #: 2271-1061-1

Option 4
Antenna Cable

A low-loss coaxial cable is provided with a TNC-male connector on one end and an SMA-male on the other end. Two lengths are available although the 5 meter is the preferred length if the extra length is not necessary:
5 Meter Length
Sutron Part # 6411-1561-1

10 Meter Length
Sutron Part # 6411-1561-2

Because SatLink2 communicates with all major weather satellites worldwide, it makes possible earth and ocean observation, data collection, and data exchange in real-time, without delays caused by national differences in software format, etc. Of course, global, real-time monitoring and modeling of weather and other environmental phenomena helps provide early warning of natural disasters such as the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean region.

SatLink2 is a stand-alone logger and transmitter. For many simple applications, SatLink2 handles all functions alone - measuring, logging, formatting and transmitting the data. The built-in SDI-12 interface gives SatLink2 the ability to make measurements for a wide range of sensors including water level, water quality, wind, and temperature. The built-in tipping bucket interface also allows you to measure precipitation without adding an expensive SDI interface. SatLink2 supports multiple measurement schedules to provide data any time it is needed. After making measurements, SatLink2 can perform simple scaling of the data and then log the data into its secure flash memory. The log in SatLink2 is capable of holding over 120,000 readings. If there is ever any problem retrieving the data through the satellite, the data can always be retrieved from the log memory.

As a stand-alone logger/transmitter, SatLink Logger supports both scheduled transmissions and Sutron’s popular adaptive random reporting transmissions. Scheduled transmissions can be configured for any satellite and the data can be formatted in SHEF or Pseudobinary formats. After each measurement is made, the data is tested and used to control random transmissions. Random transmissions can be configured to make frequent transmissions when data are changing rapidly or are in alarm conditions, and to make infrequent transmissions when the data are not in alarm.

SatLink2 is set up using a PC (desktop or laptop) or IPAQ Pocket PC running software provided by Sutron for user-friendly configuration to collect, process, log, and transmit.

SatLink2 can also be connected to a Sutron 9210, 8210 or Xpert Data Logger (and a wide variety of competitors' loggers). These data recorders can make their own measurements and format their own data for transmission. SatLink's Data Merge Mode then combines data SatLink collected from its sensors with data collected and formatted by other recorders for transmission. Sutron’s Xpert and 8210 are “SatLink Logger aware” meaning you can set up SatLink2 transmissions through the Xpert or 8210 without using SatLink2 Communicator. This seamless reciprocal integration provides a system that is easy to operate and use.
